Newsletters'Blayze'ing his own path: Writing helps 5th-grader read
The author is a Whiz Kid. Blayze, 11, a fifth grader at Union in West Chester, has incorporated lessons from the A-to-Z books and turned them into his own. With tutor Dr. Mark Mack’s guidance, Blayze is 1,000 words into his story about how a superhero Chihuahua helps Blayze find his way home to Louisiana after being lost in the Death Valley desert. Last spring, Mark thought that writing might be a way for Blayze to take his reading to the next level. It worked. "He started noticing a pattern in all of these books — a problem is presented and then a resolution," Mark says. "It makes him think more about patterns, and if you have to write a pattern, I think you can read a pattern better. His test-taking strategies have improved. He’s reading faster. What I see is improvement week over week." Read the full story and learn more about Whiz Kids in our March 2010 Newsletter.

Note to tutors: In the next few years, you might want to be on the lookout for a new book in the curriculum titled, Blayze: The Newest Superhero. A story about Blayze and his amazing sidekick: The Blazing Chihuahua.
